I picked this up for Banned Book Week, but it just didn’t do it for me. Maybe it’s because I’m not the target audience, but I found the story too far-fetched and the Dragon’s Dream unrelatable. It’s a shame, as I was hoping for something more substantial. I used to adore this series, and this was the first book that captured my imagination. Even though I didn’t read chapter this one remains a cherished favorite. We are introduced to the assorted, colourful characters who visit the pub, most of them poor and of all them thirsty for the “nappy ale”. In retrospect, I think what really drew me to this book was its ability to balance the intellectual curiosity of a scholarly work with the accessibility of a more popular history.
The characters in this book are undeniably childish, but there’s something endearing about their antics. Tristan, in particular, is a character you can only tolerate in small doses, but his mobi adds a quirky charm to the story. It’s not a deep read, but it’s undeniably entertaining. I went into the book with high expectations, and while it didn’t quite meet them, it still managed to surprise me, to delight and frustrate me in equal measure, leaving me with a sense of mild satisfaction and a desire to read more. A solid 3.5 stars. I’ll dive into a full review soon.
